Structured cabling, building works and office moves

Cabling costs least to get right before the plaster goes on. Too often the data points end up in the wrong places and the comms cabinet goes in a cupboard with no ventilation. The fibre then comes in at the opposite end of the building from where it’s needed.

If you’re building, extending or refitting, I’ll advise on where the data points, cabinet, fibre ONT and WiFi access points should go. I’ll work alongside your builder and electrician too. I can run and terminate the cable myself or bring in a team, depending on the size of the job, and every point is tested and documented. Office moves are planned the same way, including temporary and remote offices while a building is finished.

The largest job I’ve done myself was a three-storey building around 600 years old, after a full strip-out. I ran 5.5km of low-smoke Cat6 to more than 90 data points, through walls nearly two metres thick. Three network cabinets are linked by redundant runs on two separate routes.

The same building has more than 10 WiFi access points with fast roaming, 16 IP cameras and HDMI over Ethernet. Guest WiFi sits on its own VLAN behind a captive portal. The network supports more than 30 staff and hundreds of guests a week.

Once the cabling is in, business WiFi and networks can be planned around it.

What it involves

  • Data cabling and rewires

New data cabling or a full office rewire, with every point tested and recorded in the handover documents.

  • Advice before building work

Plans for data points, the comms cabinet, the fibre ONT and WiFi drawn up before the walls close, and agreed with your builder and electrician.

  • Comms cabinets

Cabinets sited where there’s power and ventilation, with everything inside laid out so faults are easy to trace.

  • Office moves

Moves planned so your internet and phones are ready at the new address, including temporary offices and staff working remotely during the move.

Questions about cabling or building works

When should we bring you in on a building project?

As early as you can, ideally while the plans are still being drawn. Once walls are plastered, adding cable means chasing, trunking or compromise. A look at the drawings early on usually settles where the data points and cabinet should go.

Do you work with our builder and electrician?

Yes. I’ll agree with them where cables run, where power is needed for the cabinet and access points, and when the data cabling goes in relative to first and second fix. It saves rework, and they know what’s expected of them.

Can you help with a move to a temporary office?

Yes. Temporary and remote offices need a working connection quickly, often for a few months. I’ll plan what moves and what stays, and how staff keep working while the main building is finished or refitted. Where fibre isn’t available in time, 4G, 5G or Starlink can fill the gap.
